Beyond Spiral Dynamics: Modern Levels of Consciousness (Level 2 Deep Dive)

Although Spiral Dynamics was once a revolutionary framework for exploring the evolution of consciousness, it has become apparent that it lacks the depth needed to fully address the complexities and diversity of modern society. Its simplistic approach fails to capture the rich nuances of contemporary consciousness, making the original version irrelevant in today’s modern world.
In the last article, we examined the differences between Spiral Dynamics “stage 1—Beige: Survival Mode” versus the Modern Version of “Level 1: Self-Reliance”. In this article, we will be examining the differences between “Level 2: Connector” in the Modern Levels of Consciousness versus the “stage 2—Purple: Tribal Mode” in Spiral Dynamics.
Spiral Dynamics “Purple: Tribal Mode” is characterized by ”a tribalistic worldview”, emphasizing: “strong group bonds and loyalty to the tribe, emphasis on tradition, rituals, and ancestral wisdom. Also, a belief in mystical forces, spirits, and magical thinking. And a priority on maintaining the safety and security of the tribe.”
The description above appears to be framed within the historical context of when that specific level of consciousness first emerged, which implies that it’s primitive and outdated. How many individuals or societies can you think of that adhere to a “tribalistic worldview” centered around “mystical forces and magical thinking”?
The description of “Level 2: Connector” in the Modern Levels framework is immensely beneficial for individuals to identify themselves at this level, and also points out the way they identify with social groups. As a result, they can evaluate and address their specific challenges related to “group identity behaviors”. It highlights the significance of qualities such as loyalty, kindness, and cooperation, while also exploring symptoms like people-pleasing, anxious attachment styles, overly agreeable, and unbalanced relationships. This includes issues such as trauma bonds, fear of losing close connections, the pressure to meet everyone’s expectations, and difficulties with personal boundaries.
The description above effectively serves as a tool for recognizing individuals and social groups that display those particular qualities, symptoms, and behaviors.
Moreover, the Modern Levels description frames the transition from “Level 2: Connector” to “Level 3: Opportunist” (what Spiral Dynamics calls “stage 3—Red: Power Mode”) as a fundamental step in conscious evolution to breaking free from dependency and unhealthy relational patterns. This explanation clarifies the purpose of Level 3, which is often mischaracterized as selfish or entitled. In reality, it represents an essential stage in the evolution of consciousness, empowering “Level 2: Connectors” to express their needs and prevent themselves from being taken advantage of.
This more nuanced description can lead to more effective strategies for encouraging non-toxic relationships, developing self-worth, and supporting Level 2s in their journey towards greater autonomy and developing skills to be more effective in this modern world.
The Modern Levels framework provides valuable insights that serve as a practical roadmap for conscious evolution. It empowers them with the knowledge needed to identify their specific challenges, comprehend the underlying causes of these issues, and presents clear, actionable steps to address and overcome their obstacles. This approach accelerates their developmental growth and consciousness evolution.

We need a more nuanced, psychologically rich, and relevant understanding of these dynamics in the modern world, moving beyond typically outdated notions of “tribalism” and “magical thinking”.
The Modern Levels description moves beyond “magical thinking” to address modern manifestations of these needs, such as:
✶The desire for strong social bonds, culture, and customs within families, friendships, and communities.
✶The influence of social groups on self-identity and decision-making.
✶The emotional reliance on others for a sense of safety and belonging.
The modern description of “Level 2: Connector” transcends the outdated “tribalistic” label, acknowledging the genuine and pressing human need for connection in today’s society. It helps us understand the challenges people face in forming and maintaining meaningful relationships in an increasingly individualistic and complex world.
Instead of simply stating that people at this level are “tribal,” the Modern Levels framework explores the emotional and psychological reasons behind this need for connection. This allows for a more nuanced and realistic understanding of behaviors like people-pleasing, anxious attachment, social conformity, and fear of abandonment.
While Spiral Dynamics’ “stage 2—Purple: Tribal Mode” heavily emphasizes “magical thinking,” “Level 2: Connector” focuses on the emotional and psychological dependence on relationships. This allows us to identify individuals who strongly prioritize connection without necessarily attributing their behavior to “magical thinking” or “primitive beliefs”.
For example, someone with a strong fear of being alone and a tendency to prioritize their partner’s needs above their own would be readily identifiable at Level 2 Connector, regardless of their belief in superstitions.
The upcoming article will examine the distinctions between “Level 3: Opportunist” in the Modern Levels of Consciousness and “Stage 3—Red: Power Mode” in Spiral Dynamics.
